Before the Backyard Brawl this week, WVU quarterback Jarrett Brown measured up the importance of the game to WVU by simply stating, "We can do the same thing they did to us two years ago."
If by that Brown meant that his team could enjoy a nice victory drink in Morgantown or make a couple of t-shirts, well then I guess he's right. If he meant that with a victory WVU could almost end the world for Pitt, could cost them everything that matters, like a shot at the BCS Championship game, well then he's dead-wrong.
Sure it sucks to lose the Backyard Brawl, especially to those fans. You know, the guys who chant "Eat shit Pitt!", who slash your tires in the parking lots for having PA license plates, who risk jail time and try to cut you with a broken bottle after the game win or lose. The degenerates who get so many DUIs and public intoxication's that the only jobs they can hold down are changing oil at Jiffy Lube or washing dishes at Shoney's. It's no surprise that their two biggest players in last night's game were Noel Devine, who has multiple children, and Jock Sanders, who has multiple arrests. It's enough to make you sick.
Except when you remember that it didn't matter to Pitt. They'll slip a few spots in the top 25, sure, and they lose bragging rights for a year against their rivals. Their biggest game is still next week against Cincinnati. Lose, and the season really is destroyed. Win, and Pitt gets way bigger bragging rights than a three point victory in the Brawl. They'll get an automatic BCS bowl game bid with a chance to possibly topple a team with a huge profile. Trust me, I don't remember the 2006 Backyard Brawl that well, but I do remember WVU beating Georgia in the Sugar Bowl that year, a game in which Steve Slaton broke Tony Dorsett's Sugar Bowl rushing record. The fact that WVU and not Pitt won a hugely high-profile game like that hurt way worse than losing the Brawl that year.
So nothing significant is lost for Pitt. Let Morgantown get hammered on moonshine and sport their coon skin hats until they stumble up the coal hill to the double-wide for a hearty meal of Spaghetti-O's and dead groundhog found on the side of the road. I hope they enjoy it, because it's all they've got.
Pitt, meanwhile, has bigger dead groundhogs found on the side of the road to fry.

Don't be such a sore loser - and we don't slash the tires of cars with pa plates because a lot of people from pa go to school @ WVU for your information - take your loss like a man and u should be happy because we saved you from getting embarrassed in a BCS game, again - and get ready for the unranked pitt basketball squad to get banged out by the mounties - eat shit
You saved us from BCS embarrassment? Even if you read nothing else but this post, you'd know Pitt wins the Big East with a win against Cincinnati next week. The only downside of last night's loss was if WVU beats Rutgers and Cincy beats Pitt next week and Pitt ends up with a Mickey Mouse bowl bid.
And how long have you been waiting to bust out the basketball rip? 10 years? I literally cannot remember the last time Pitt was unranked. Oh well, enjoy your year in the sun (even though Villanova's better) and watch out for Pitt next year.
Just another WVU hooplehead who doesn't pay attention.
a lot of good the pitt b-ball ranking does u anyway - other than last year u never go as far as wvu in the tornament and i could easily say the same thing about the last ten years and pitt football the biggest win u had in the last decade was against us two years ago - u people have no connection to pitt and only started liking them because they have a respectable basketball team - HAD a respectable basketball team
eatshitpitt (i.e. Kevin Pittsnogle) your comment about Pitt basketball is as ridiculous as I'd expect coming from a hooplehead. And we started liking Pitt because we were in grade school and they are from PITTSBURGH our actual hometown. By the way Pitt's biggest victory WAS the 13-9 game, in a year where they didn't even go to a bowl game. How does that make you feel? I know it was so awesome to me as a Pitt fan that it's taking 26 napkins to mop up the all the cum in my pants from watching the highlights on Youtube.
Pitt will be back on top of WVU in the rankings next year anyways when Isaiah Epps comes in. Enjoy your month in the sun until Notre Dame, Villanova and UConn knock you back down to Earth. I'll be waiting for you when it happens.
im glad to see ur already looking to next years recruiting as your b-ball bright spot - and its always nice when people fall back on good old name calling to make up for a loss - and i said biggest win of the decade not just one year - so i will say ity again becasue u apparently didnt quite get it the first time - the ONLY good win in the last ten years is WVU - u do also do so well in bowl games - how many points did u score last year? or the year before that? and the year before that? and so on and so on... and i went to high school with you all and i dont remember ANYONE repping pitt EVER - so if ur going to pick some random school to back (because u didnt go to one) based on proximity i geuss OSU isnt that far away...
Well Christ guy if you're so concerned about name calling don't close a comment by saying "eat shit." And don't make assumptions about who I liked 10 years ago, because I've loved this team since Pete Gonzalez and the Liberty Bowl season. Lastly, if you paid attention at all, you'd know I went to college for 5 years.
As for the 13-9 game being Pitt's biggest win of the decade....it was. Our biggest win was two years ago, yours was what, four? What do you want me to say? Pitt's a program on the rise, WVU's a program on the decline. The facts are the facts.
U went to pitt for 5 years? and im not sure why i would know that u went to some college (not pitt) if i 'paid attention,' 0 paid attention to what exactly? did u mention it in this post? - what name am i calling you when i say eat shit pitt? and i still dont recall seeing anyone from this website where any pitt gear in highschool
In an attempt to steer this discussion back to the actual game (despite the important debate on who was a fan first), this is what I posted at SmokingMusket.com:
As much as I hate to admit it, the better team won Friday night. Congratulations. I was convinced that Pitt would spank WVU this year, as I thought this Pitt team was much better than the ‘07 or ’08 teams and that this WVU team was worse than the past two years. I’m still not convinced that WVU is better overall, but they were that night and that is all that counts.
I would like to thank the 90% of WVU fans who did not try to fight me and my buddies who simply cheered for their team.
That being said, See you guys at Heinz in 2010!
To begin the assault on WVU alums, students, and the people of West Virginia is ridiculous. Like patriotism being the last resort of a scoundrel so is attacking the character of a wide and varied group of people the last resort of an injured Pitt fan.
The University itself is of top notch caliber and it produces great characters, people, and contributers to society. While we harp upon how many children Noel Devine has (as if we are capable of judging him) We forget that Pat White and Steve Slaton (an elite talent)are class acts and that the people who engineerd Mr. Obama's helicopters (Marine One(he uses many)) all attended West Virginia University.
As for the fan base. While i accept that these people hold a reputation that is less than desirable, "soccer" hooligans are a group that can easily be likened to the WVU faithful. I say this not only because of their violent behaviour but also because of what is the cause to the effect of said behaviour...passion and love for their squad. Both groups are tribes, tribes that engage in rituals and that defend the honor and territory that is theirs and their team's. I have never once seen a WVU fan attack any oppositioin fan for any other reason than the fact that they were incited by said fan.
EX.1: Dan's example of a Pitt fan getting hit in the face with a bottle, a story which i recounted to him. WVU had just lost a chance to play for the national title and in a WVU bar on this night of all nights a Pitt fan screamed "FUCK YEAH!" so he got hit in the face with a bottle. I don't go to bars full of Steeler fans and cheer for the Ravens when they win for the same reason: i have class and i don't want my ass kicked. We defend our pride with passion (because WE have it) and also because if someone comes into my house and assaults me or my family physically or verbally i will defend myself, would you do the same?
Now for the teams, When the Big East was floundering who saved it? WVU of course. Winning 2 BCS bowl games against SEC champ Georgia and Big 12 champ Oklahoma. Not a giant like Utah (who Pitt was embarassed by in their last BCS trip) the #1 and #2 conferences in the nation, we beat. This year Pitt played NOONE, i repeat NOONE, up until WVU. They had a soft schedule that included Buffalo, an academy team Navy, and a sorry Notre Dame squad that was big in name only. But Pitt knows this because they are the masters of hype who always fall flat due to this fact...they're overhpyed. WVU at least went out of conference to the Big 12 and SEC. WVU was Pitts first test and they failed, actally Bill Stull failed because he was the weak link (maybe the only one) waiting to be exposed all season. Lets just hope Pitt doesn't make it to a BCS game so that the Big East doesn't have to be called into question after another Pitt drubbing in the national spotlight.
I normally wouldn't defend something like this or write this much but I (unlike everyone else in this discussion) hold a degree from one of the institutions in question. Due to this I must defend my Alma Mater because in doing so i defend myself and my WVU family, which is what it is. I am not an outsider in this conversation this is a direct attack on me, imagine if i were up for a job position and i lost it due to the fact that my superiors held the same prejudiced stereotypes about WVU that you Pitt fans hold.
In closing, I would normally root for Pitt to win, Pitt and WVU at the top every year that is what i wanted, but now that i see how some Pitt fans react in loss i cannot feel this way any longer. Pitt fans resort to attacking the students, alumni, and people of West Virginia when they do lose...like racists...now i only wish Pitt to sink into the depths of college football.
I like you Dan but i'm insulted,
Steven Kortepeter
